Writer's Wednesday || From the Shadows

 

It was years ago now

When you once cried out

And I saw you and gave a shout

Catching you before you fell

As the water swelled

You thought that I left you alone

That I was dead, only bones

That I had given up and sunk like stones

You shed sweet tears for me

As I was lost in the endless sea

And now you’ll never know

How I watched from the shadows

Standing in the snow

Just so that I would know

You were safe and sound

You were safe and sound

You grew up in the sun

And many hearts you won

All the while, you thought I was gone

Crying for my loss

Thinking I was lost

You always looked so alone

Like your heart was guarded by stone

As you sat there on that cold, hard throne

You waited for me there

Holding on to our love so rare

And now you’ll never know

How I watched from the shadows

Just so that I would know

Many hands were raised to wound you

But I would always guard you

My face hidden by the hood

Of shadows where I stood

I wrote this in a sort of "Of Monsters and Men" song cadence. The rhyming is choppy, and the rhythm, but I kind of like it that way... Also, the story isn't clear. So, if you want, comment and tell me what story you interpret the poem into! I would love that.

Do any of y'all like Of Monsters and Men? How about Imagine Dragons? A friend introduced me to their music and I've fallen in love with it. Especially "The King and Lionheart."
